Today’s Word: Irresistible

Steve · July 13, 2013 · 17 Comments

Starting something new: With today’s post I’m trying out a new idea. Knowing how pressed we all are for time — and equally aware of how much “stuff” comes into all of our mailboxes each day asking to be read — today during prayer I asked a simple question of God: What do I have to give or say to you that could possibly rise above the noise of our everyday lives? The answer I sensed perhaps should have been obvious to me: Give them less and invite them into silence.

As I have written before, silence is perhaps one of the best tools we have to draw closer to God and continue to make some sense of our lives. So while I may still post the occasional longer entry about something on my mind or something I have read, I’m going to try to write more often and shorter (about the length of one of my Living Faith devotions), all the while inviting you to spend some time in silence, where the God of all of our wants and desires dwells and waits for us. We can find God there, in the midst of family crises, illness, work problems or loneliness, if we only enter in and reach out for the One who created us. “Reaching out for God is reaching God,” as Mark Thibodeaux, SJ, has written so eloquently.

So I’m going to be living and praying each day, searching for one word upon which I can briefly reflect, a word that will also beckon you to spend some time in silence, searching for that word’s unique meaning for you in your journey of faith.

Today’s Word: Irresistible

I heard this word today somewhere — irresistible. Now there are lots of senseless things that can sometimes be irresistible to us, such as television, eating too much of the wrong things or other such vices. That perhaps is a subject for another time. But the immediate sense of this word that I felt today is a comforting and peaceful notion: We are irresistible to God. God cannot get enough of us.

But we have a hard time believing this, don’t we? Why, we ask, would God want to spend time with us? Why would God care one way or another if we turn toward Him and say, “here I am?” But we also know the answer if we care to take the time to think about it. We are irresistible to God because God made us, and He made us to be in relationship with Him. The beauty and grace of all this is that when we don’t respond, when we forget to turn toward God, God is still there, waiting for us. God never grows weary of waiting because we are precious and perfect creatures of His own imagination and love. God waits because He cannot possibly resist the urge to do so. So believe it: You are irresistible.

Ask yourself in silence: Am I willing to believe this? If so, how do I respond? How does it change my life?

Guest Blogger: Anthony Hew’s “Who am I? A reflection of my existence”

Steve · June 22, 2013 · Leave a Comment

This will be the last of my guest bloggers for a while. I promise to return to my own postings very soon with a short series on the ministry of spiritual direction. I’ll explore the ministry and its history, talk a little about what it is (and isn’t) and give some insight to my own approach to this caring, sacred ministry.

For now, we return a post from another friend from Malaysia, a beautiful country I had the blessing to visit a few year’s ago, for his reflection on this piece of scripture: “When I see your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and stars that you set in place—Who are we that you are mindful of us, and a son of man that you care for us? Yet you have made us little less than a god, crowned us with glory and honor.” Psalm 8:4-6.

He writes:

As I reflected on my life’s experiences, some words and phrases inevitably came to mind. Psalm 139 featured prominently with “fearfully and wonderfully made” (v. 14), “ … knit me … my mother’s womb” (v. 13). With such awareness of God’s immense and amazing love for us mortals, I became drawn toward Psalm 8: “What is man that you are mindful of him … and crowned him with glory and honour?”

Yes indeed, who are we? Who am I? Songwriters Charles Wesley (in 1738) and Rusty Goodman (in 1965) asked these same questions. They penned beautiful words such as “Oh when I think of how He left His home in glory … Came and dwelt among the lowly such as I” … “bled for Adam’s helpless race.”

Guest blogger: Ann Ammar’s “Walking by Faith”

Steve · June 9, 2013 · 4 Comments

Writer and composer Ann Ammar of Valley Forge, PA, is the third guest blogger who wrote in response to this posted prompting from the book of Psalms: “When I see your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and stars that you set in place—Who are we that you are mindful of us, and a son of man that you care for us? Yet you have made us little less than a god, crowned us with glory and honor.” Psalm 8:4-6

Ann’s reflection and a song, complete with a YouTube video, is below:

Less than a year ago my youngest daughter, then age 14, became suicidal. She had suffered a long and deep depression that began when she was just eleven years old. Her extreme depression seemed to have resulted from a combination of factors: possibly a genetic predisposition, maybe the hormonal changes from puberty mixed with extreme stress brought about by our family’s sudden and unexpected intense trials, some of which included her mother’s diagnosis of breast cancer and being uprooted from her familiar and secure environment when we moved to a foreign country – Israel – and then back again all within a four year period. Her highly sensitive nature felt deeply these traumatic life events and she plummeted into extreme anxiety and an unimaginable deep, dark depression.

Guest blogger: Lily Lee’s “God’s Tapestry”

Lily Lee, who lives in Malaysia, is the second of three guest bloggers who wrote in response to this posted prompting from the book of Psalms: “When I see your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and stars that you set in place—Who are we that you are mindful of us, and a son of man that you care for us? Yet you have made us little less than a god, crowned us with glory and honor.” Psalm 8:4-6

Lily writes:

On April 10, 2011, I found myself on Waiheke Island, Auckland, New Zealand, attending the wedding of one of my nephews. He is a beautiful man, compassionate and loving, with a unique sense of humour. He tells jokes with a straight face, which often leaves his listeners baffled until he breaks out in a hearty guffaw. Intelligent and articulate, he is also very knowledgeable on a wide range of subjects, hence an interesting person to talk to.

His wedding held a special significance for me. Somehow along life’s way, he had lost faith in the Institution of Marriage. When I had met him a year earlier at another nephew’s wedding in Perth, we had discussed the whys and wherefores of his doubts. This was after he told me he had met someone whom he would consider marriage with but yet had continued to fight a raging battle within his heart and mind.

Guest blogger: Kathleen Matson on Heavenly Light

Steve · May 26, 2013 · 10 Comments

Kathleen Matson of the Boston area was one of several readers who responded to my plea two weeks ago for guest bloggers willing to write 500 words or less about this beautiful piece of the Psalms:

“When I see your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and stars that you set in place—Who are we that you are mindful of us, and a son of man that you care for us? Yet you have made us little less than a god, crowned us with glory and honor.” Psalm 8:4-6

Kathleen writes:

Sunset with friends. SJG photo.

The little ones were finally down for the night after our busy day at The Cape. We were enjoying a much needed weekend respite with dear, old friends.  While our husbands watched a Red Sox game, my friend and I took a walk down to the beach to breathe in the sea air and unwind.
